A STORY USED TO THINK WITH
The road doesn’t give answers. It gives time.
Pay attention long enough, and most things will tell you what they are.
- Lyla Rae Hightower
AUTHORS NOTE - ABOUT THIS PROJECT
What follows is a story told over time and through different surfaces.
Lyla Rae Hightower is MY constructed narrator, used intentionally and openly to explore real questions about work, creativity, loss, and meaning as they unfold in the world. Some details are shaped for clarity. Some moments are compressed. Others take their time and refuse to be rushed.
The thinking, however, is sincere.
This is not a guide or a manifesto. It’s a practice — using story, song, and the road as a way to stay with questions long enough to see what they reveal, without pretending there’s a shortcut.
IF IT FEELS UNUSUAL – IT’S BECAUSE IT IS.
Rather than presenting conclusions, this project follows questions as they develop – through making music, navigating modern systems of promotion and technology, and reckoning with loss, ambition, and purpose along the way. The narrative exists to carry the thinking, not the other way around.
You don’t need to believe Lyla is “real” to participate. You only need to accept the premise, the way you would with any novel, essay, or parable: that a point of view, followed honestly, can reveal something true.
Some people will encounter this project through a song and leave it there. Others will follow more closely – reading along through the Letters from The Long Ride, Listening in sequence, and watching the story take shape over time.
Both are valid.
This is not a story with a fixed ending. I have no idea where it’s going. It’s a practice – of attention, of craft, and of asking better questions – told through music and the long road between songs.
One last note on technology: the melodies, lyrics, lessons, stories, final mixes, and choices of imagery are all mine. The voice and expression of Lyla… are, well, created with tools.
I hope you enjoy it.
